wooden book (ongoing)
This will be a place to document my first, and most likely the biggest time consuming experiment I will host in this project.
I started off with a simple sketch as seen here:
A photograph of my plans for this experiment. |
This was just a simple sketch just to collect my ideas and plan out what I would like to do for this experiment.
I spent the early parts of my project picking out scraps of wood I desired and had help to measure down to the shapes needed, and once that was done it was handed off to then cut it down to what I desired.
as seen in photo 1, 2, 3 and 4. However I faced my first issues when I had trouble lining up the wood in a way to look like an open book, but it was overcome when I sat down to discuss with peers as to what I should do to combat this issue- which resulted in me using door hinges and wood glue to help lock the design in place and keep it sturdy. As seen in photo 5, I had already sketched out what I would have liked to burn into the wood, but I faced to issues that caused this experiment to be incomplete: The first issue was the wood that I had picked out for my piece was not working very well with my pyrography pen as usually I would let it heat up and start working and it would immediately start to burn- this one didn't, I had to press down with a little bit of force and take my lines a lot slower than I would have liked meaning it was taking me much longer to do just a few lines. This was then also an issue because of the scale of my piece as it was pretty large for a pyrography piece, but then it taking ages to burn, with both these issues combined I had a lot of trouble with completing it!
If I was to do this again I would definitely look into better wood to burn, as well as scaling my piece down so I could get a few pieces done at once.
